Fall Spanish Mentor Texts


You know what they say about teachers being hoarders? Well, as of lately I can completely confess I've become a habitual hoarder of children's literature in Spanish. I feel my new-found obsession is completely validated when I see my students' eyes light up as they see me put a new book in my library. Being that quality translated Spanish books are often hard to find in the level needed, I'm completely okay with hoarding what is available.

I have been recently taken on a weekly theme in my Kindergarten classroom. My themes of the week are complimented with a display of texts that motivate my students to learn! This past week, we learned all about pumpkins. Here are some amazing books I found to spotlight with my students during the week.

Review: This book I would consider to be a great read aloud for students in Kindergarten and 1st grade because of it's repetition and great vocabulary! The font is tricky for young readers to read fluently but overall this is a great text to have in the classroom.

Review: This is a fun Halloween story that Kindergarten through 3rd grade kids will enjoy. It traces the growing season of one special pumpkin from its start as a very tiny green bump on a vine to a huge carved jack-o-lantern that wins the town pumpkin contest. The pumpkin becomes the biggest and best pumpkin in the whole town and wins the contest because two mouse friends, Clayton and Desmond, without realizing it, are both taking care of it.

Readers' Attitude Interest Survey

I recently am taking a Developmental Children's Literature class for my Masters Program. For this class, we began to think about all that was crucial to developing a positive community of readers. In order to do this, it was discussed the importance of gauging students prior feelings and likes about reading, also called a reader attitude and interest survey.

Because there are NOT many of these I could find in Spanish, I decided to develop my very own. The one I developed has all portions translated in both English & Spanish. The reading attitude and interest inventories are based on survey interview sheets that are administered to students. Teachers collect and analyze the data to determine what types of books and genres students are interested in reading. Both the English and the Spanish packet comes with the following items:

#1: Attitude Survey “Do you like to read?” This activity helps determine students' attitude about reading. Do they read at home? Do they like to read during free time? Do they like to read with a partner? All of these questions help to determine how they feel about reading. The students can select from three different adorable facial expressions I don't like, I like, or I love.

#2: Interest Survey “What do you like to read?” This handout allows students to look at a variety of book covers and circle which one most interests them. Each selection has a variety of genres to choose from. The data will be used to determine the genres the student most enjoys.

#3: Interest Survey Answer Key: This answer key is used to help the teacher determine which genres the student is most interested in reading.

#4: Interest Survey Student Data Form: This paper is used for the Teacher's Records. It is a easy way to look back on what genres the student enjoys, and doesn't enjoy. It is also a useful tool for students to look back on once they have grown in their reading and to see if their interests have changed over time.

#5: Monthly Reading Goal Tracker: Motivate readers using this handy Monthly Reading tracker. Students can count the ticks in the clock and shade in the number of minutes they read each day! There is a spot for parents to sign off, and a spot for students to write their total number of minutes read throughout the month.

Maria Had a Little Llama

Review: Dominguez, a Mexican American illustrator, adapts the familiar rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb” to a new, Peruvian setting and offers each verse in both English and Spanish. When Maria’s white llama follows her to school, the students are amused, but the teacher sends him outdoors. He waits patiently while the teacher explains that the llama loves Maria because Maria loves thellama. Kudos to Dominguez for using the entire poem rather than just the familiar opening verses. On the other hand, there is no mention of the original authorship. Using distinctive features of Andean dress, culture, and landscape (at one point the characters stand of a map of Peru), the gouache-and-ink illustrations feature bold lines and simple forms. Dominguez uses color effectively, with the white llama and Maria’s bright red cap making them easy to spot. With its cheerful combination of fresh and familiar elements, this distinctive version of the rhyme makes a fine addition to library collections, particularly where there is a demand for bilingual picture books. - Carolyn Phelancome

Practice Packet: 3rd Grade Dolch Sight Words

I can't even begin to explain to you how excited about this packet I am! Eek. I can feel the excitement coming out of my ears. I have worked a while on it, double checked, triple checked... and finally the English version is posted. Now I continue the work for the Spanish version! And don't you worry folks, it will be here sooner than later I promise.

This packet includes a total of 41 of the 3rd Grade Dolch sight words. Each sight word has an individual page that allows students to interact with the word. Studies have shown that interaction, questions, personalization will help students increase retention. That is the purpose of this packet, increase retention of sight words while having a little fun :)

As you can see in the preview images, each of the pages have their own unique pieces and a few repetitive activities that vary according to the word. Activities that are in the packet include word searches, drawing, mathematics, problem solving, rhyming, writing and coloring. All of the images in this packet are designed and drawn by myself.
